Pop musician and film composer Danny Elfman continues his longstanding collaboration with director Tim Burton (Elfman made his movie music debut way back in 1985 on Pee-Wee’s Huge Adventure) with Sleepy Hollow. For Burton’s cinematic take on the ghoulish Washington Irving classic, Johnny Depp stars as Ichabod Crane, while Elfman does his best to make some truly frightful mood music. Needless to say, he succeeds. Dramatic string passages, loud percussion, and a children’s choir all contribute to this eerie movie score that never settles on a singular theme. “Into the Woods” is the disc’s creepiest moment, where the sounds of strings, brass, and a choir make a web of tension. There are no dull moments here; whether driving and powerful (“Introduction”) or mysterious and ethereal (“Sweet Dreams”), Elfman’s score is–as usual–superb. –Jason Verlinde

Oscar is a fickle small nude statue, one who historically seems to have had it in for talents like Ennio Morricone and Randy Newman. Perhaps because his uncle Alfred had a mantel full of the li’l gold fellas, Randy may yet have to stand on his head and spit nickels to win an Academy Award. Newman’s work on Pleasantville begs to be honored for less theatrical reasons: doing what the greatest film scores do, fleshing out character and plot nearly subliminally. Sure, Newman gets to lovingly (re-)make the bubbly, smotheringly sentimental theme song of the prototypical ’50s-family-TV-comedy-that-never-was (one that serves as the nexus for the film’s social and cultural metaphors), but it’s the composer’s gentle, emotional touches (recalling some of the more plaintive moments of Copland and Bernstein) that help truly add color to the characters’ black-and-white sitcom planet. Pleasantville has been lauded for its dreams and masterfully subtle visual effects, but Newman’s music is what holds it all together. –Jerry McCulley

Benedikt Brydern is an award-winning composer and performer. His scores have been featured in film, television and on the concert stage in the United Sates and internationally. From the Miramax documentary Rhyme & Reason to independent films like Dunsmore , directed by Academy Nominee Peter Spirer, from Jon Voight s children tale The Tin Soldier to the mysterious Outpatient (starring Justin Kirk), whether using traditional orchestral or electronic techniques. He contributed music to USA s mini-series Spartacus and worked on blockbusters like Entrapment and Urban Legend with composer Christopher Young. Having been a violin child protégé since age 6 he now holds a masters degree in performance and performs evenly with local symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles. He has concertized and recorded with Leonard Bernstein, Sir Georg Solti, Etta James, Sinead O Connor, and many others. As an arranger, orchestrator and producer he has worked with John O’Hurley ( “Seinfeld” ., “Dancing With The Stars” ), violin stylist David Wilson, electric cellist Marston and many others.
