History Of Our World: Breakbeat & Jungle, Mixed By DJ DB

History Of Our World: Breakbeat & Jungle, Mixed By DJ DB

Amazon.com
Back before sped-up breakbeats and ultraheavy bass solidified into drum & bass as we know it–back even before everybody ongoing calling its protean form jungle–there was this 25-track mix, place together by DJ DB, with bits of the ultrafast records that were starting to occupy dance floors in 1991 in taxonomies nobody was sure of yet. There are a few bona fide classics (4 Hero’s “Mr. Kirk’s Nightmare,” the Omni Trio’s “Renegade Snares”), but the real kick of the compilation is hearing the fundamentals that were just starting to become a genre in proximity to each other–the tiny, sped-up snippets of diva voices, the weird synth chords, the mind-rattling clatter of rhythms cranked to maximum speed. –Douglas Wolk

World Waits

World Waits

Album Details
Ex- Frontman for Sunny Day Real Estate and the Fire Theft.Amazon.com
While it wasn’t the whole planet waiting patiently for Jeremy Enigk’s follow-up to his 1996 solo debut Return of the Frog Queen, a healthy fraction has followed the Seattle artist’s work since Sunny Day Real Estate and owing to the Fire Theft. And most will find the wait for this one well worth it. Enigk’s voice is close to perfection, blanketed by resonating melodies and bold arrangements, and although his lyrics can be hard to decode, they flutter beneath the swirling guitars and calming keyboards in a near fragile state. “I cannot change any man’s despise/But I can make known forgiving waters have flown,” Enigk pleads in the self-forgiveness song “River to Sea,” which rivals the immensely personal “Dare a Smile” and spooky “Damien Dreams” as the album’s best tracks. The latter is one of several on Planet Waits written nearly a decade ago, some intended for another Fire Theft record. That, apparently, remains on the back burner, while Jeremy Enigk’s solo career is out front. –Scott Holter

New Voices New World

New Voices New World

Album Description
Boulder, CO musicians Scott Johnson and Mark Oblinger wanted to do something positive and see if well loved music could really make a difference in the quality of people’s lives.

Funded mainly by a $10,000 investment from a couple Johnson met while playing his music at a workshop in 2002, New Voices New Planet is the first of a series that will provide musicians a place to express — in a positive, constructive way — the kind of planet and future they want to make. “This is music in this area what we are for, not what we are against,” said Johnson.

With a diversity of musical styles ranging from pop, rock and blues, to jazz, Latin and Irish, New Voices New Planet features songs written by Johnson, produced by Oblinger (a ex- member of Firefall), and sung by five singers from the Boulder/Denver area.

New Rules For the New Economy: 10 Radical Strategies for a Connected World

New Rules For the New Economy: 10 Radical Strategies for a Connected World

Product Description
A vigorous and groundbreaking book in the tradition of such futuristic bestsellers as Megatrends, The Year 2000, and Future Shock

Forget supply and demand. Forget computers. The ancient rules are broken. Today, interaction, not computation, drives change. We are rushing into a planet where connectivity is all, and where ancient business know-how means nothing. In this new economic order, success flows primarily from understanding networks, and networks have their own rules. In New Rules for the New Economy, Kelly presents ten fundamental principles of the together economy that invert the traditional wisdom of the industrial planet.

Succinct and memorable, New Rules clarifies why these powerful laws are already hardwired into the new economy, and how they play out in all kinds of business–both low and high tech–all over the planet. More than an overview of new economic principles, it prescribes clear and specific strategies for success in the network economy. For any worker, CEO, or middle manager, New Rules is the survival kit for the new economy.

* Penguin Readers Guide Bound into Every Book
* A Business Week bestseller for eight weeks
* Kevin Kelly is one of the founding editors of Wired magazine

“A gem. Very small and very sweet, with a provocation on every page. Chapter 10 by itselfis worth the price of admission many times over.” –Tom Peters, author of The Circle of Innovation and coauthor of In Search of ExcellenceAmazon.com Review
There’s hype and then there’s the Internet. The widespread emergence of the Planet Wide Web and the thought of a network economy have set new records for excess in in tears marketing campaigns, breathless newspaper and magazine articles, and topsy-turvy financial markets. From his perch as founding editor of Wired magazine, Kevin Kelly has long been one of the new economy’s chief hypesters. In New Rules for the New Economy, Kelly tries to encapsulate the characteristics of this emerging economic order by laying out 10 rules for how the wired planet operates. The result is a dizzying, now and again perplexing, but always thought-provoking look at the behavior of networks and their look on our economic lives. At the root of this network revolution is interaction. As Kelly writes:

Interaction is the foundation of society, of our culture, of our humanity, of our own individual identity, and of all economic systems. This is why networks are such a huge deal. Interaction is so close to culture and society itself that the effects of technologizing it are beyond the scale of a mere industrial-sector cycle. Interaction, and its ally computers, is a special case in economic history. Not because it happens to be the fashionable leading business sector of our day, but because its cultural, technological, and conceptual impacts reverberate at the root of our lives.

Kelly’s genius lies in synthesizing large amounts of information in unique and fascinating ways. His ability to turn a phrase is reflected in the names he gives to his 10 rules, and it makes this book a pleasure to read. Some, for model, are: “Embrace the Swarm: The Power of Transfer” (Rule 1); “No Harmony, All Flux: Seeking Sustainable Disequilibrium” (Rule 8); and “Let Go at the Top: After Success, Devolution” (Rule 6). A few of his dreams have a kind of Teflon quality that makes them elusive and hard to evaluate. But that’s OK. Like other prognosticators of the future–Alvin Toffler and John Naisbitt come to mind–Kelly’s job is to imagine a new planet. Far from hype, New Rules for the New Economy is required reading for anyone pondering business in the not-too-distant future. –Harry C. Edwards
